Seven's First Field Training

Emma and Seven (Pistil/Scanner) had their first field training session with great results as you can see

Pistil/Scanner Litter

Pistil had a litter sired by Scanner on October 08, 2011. For details of the parents see their pages under Girls and Boys respectively.

For more info and photos visit the Puppies Page!
Suzi Q Earns Bronze Award

Right after winning her Agility Championship Suzi Q (Fling/ Scanner) added a Bronze award above it. Congratulations again to Dick and Suzi!!

New Master Obedience Trial Champion Sunni

MOTCH Piroska Fling's Sunni Summer "Sunni" (Fire/Fling pup June 05)

To earn a MOTCH (Master Obedience Trial Champion) you must earn 40 points. 15 - Utility 15 - Open 10 - either. The scores must be 190 or better in Open, and 185 1/2 or better in Utility.

"Sunni has had all the required points for a year. We just needed the High In Class, which she took in Utility at the Skaha Club venue, September 10th, in "HOT" Osoyoos. Sunni also took the High In Trial in a run off. Her winning score was 190. But considering the temperature of approximately 36C at 4:00 in the afternoon.......I felt my little girl did absolutely WONDERFUL!!! There were a total of 26 dogs in this trial.
Now we are onto some more fun.........Tracking!
Jackie."
The Kimberleys in Kimberley

The Kimberleys won 2 titles in Kimberley, BC, on Sept 17 & 18, 2011. Lucy received her Master's Steeplechase Dog of Canada and Sophie her Starter's Games Dog of Canada. Lynne and the dogs were as hot as Kimberley! Pictured are Sophie, Lynne, Lucy and Sarah, the judge.

Sophie follows Lucy's success in Agility

The Kimberleys in Lethbridge had both dogs out to a trial in August. Lucy has her Bronze award (a post grad title after Champion, the same as her sire, Fire). Sophie, now 2, had her first trial and picked up 4 legs toward her first title.
The white-faced one is Lucy. Note their smiling faces - Vizslas love Agility as it challenges both their body and mind. Sophie does a victory leap into Lynne's arms! Further congratulations to all!

The Fire has gone out of our lives

Here's Fire honoring Pele

In late August we laid Fire to rest next to his littermate, Pele. He was on painkiller daily but in the last week slipped a couple of times on his right rear leg and then a few days later went down and couldn't get up so we made the decision we had been fearing for some time. He was about 5 months short of 13. His marvellous career lives on in his offspring and their offspring. See his story on the "Boys" page of our web site.
To paraphrase another breeder -
Every time we lose one of our dogs it leaves a small hole in my heart in the shape of a golden dog. Perhaps if I live long enough my heart will become solid gold and I will become as wise and kind and loving as our Vizslas.
Seven the Super Dog

Emma Hedman's "Seven" was in the Super Dogs display at the Vancouver Pacific National Exhibition. This is the biggest attraction at the fair. Emma called him 7 as he was the 7th pup of 7 and the lone male. Super dogs called him 7Up because he was so bouncy. The irony is my Dad and I were 7up bottlers in Victoria and Nanaimo many years ago. The slogan then was "Nothing does it like 7UP". That's how Emma feels!

Rest in Peace, Fuego

"Fuego" Piroska Light My Fire (Covey/Fire May 28 '03) Passed away suddenly. A typical Vizsla, he loved to run the trails and beaches and cuddle with his family. Sadly missed by Jeremy, Laura, Riley, Grandpa & Grandma.

Rest in Peace, Tasha

Ch Piroska Summer Sun's Kiss CD, FDJ, CGC "Tasha" was put to rest the last week of July '11 after a small stroke and then a major one the next day. She was 14 in April. She managed to get the above 4 titles while producing 32 beautiful pups in 3 litters. Anthea adopted her to her 10 acres in Port Alberni, where she has lived like Royalty for 8 years. Her daughter and granddaughter joined her over the years.

"There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived throught its turnings or walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given."
by Will Alexander (one of Canada's top show handlers)

SuziQ goes ATChC!

This is ATCH Piroska Getter Dun "Suzi Q" handled by owner Dick Rhodes getting it done winning her Championship at Nationals in Calgary. (His wife, Deb received a Bronze award in London at the World Trial with her Border Collie.) Suzi is shown hunting which she excels at, too. She is a Scanner/Fling pup born Feb 15, 2008.

Petal

Piroska Petal To The Metal "Petal" takes a 4th place in the Derby class at the BC Field Trial in May. Trained by owner Kristy Emery and handled by fellow Vizsla owner Geoff.
New Conformation Champion

Piroska Molten Lava "Kona" is now a conformation Champion. His first show was at Mill Bay May 14,15 with owner Kathy Torrie (her first show) handling where he took the breed the 2 days he entered and then took the Breed at the Nanaimo Kennel Club June 17-19 with Brenda Beadnell handling. He is a Leia/Fire pup born 16 months ago. Congratulations to all! (picture to follow)

Lucy goes ATChC!

On the weekend of May 21-22, 2011, Lynne and Lucy excelled at an Agility Association of Canada trial. Unlike CKC and AKC trials, in AAC you must run without faults to qualify in a run. They ran 8 times and Q'd every time! This completed their Master's Gambler title, Agility Trial Championship, and Bronze Award just like Fire, her sire. Lucy is Piroska Fling's Memory out of Fling.
Rounding out the quartet is Dr. Ray Kimberley of Lethbridge who is the wheelman and photographer. Waiting in the wings is Sophie, just turned 2. Congratulations from Fire and Fling and us!
To add to the fun , the judge in the picture is Deb Rhodes, whose husband, Dick, runs Susie Q, Piroska Getter Dun, a 3 yr old Fling/Scanner Vizsla.

Rea gets her AADC

Here's Rea ( a Fling/Scanner pup 4 next month) owned, trained and handled by Lisa Duffy in Courtenay getting her Advanced Agility title. Well-bred Vizslas are agile and fast and love the mental and physical challenge of Agility.
Sunni - Top Obedience Vizsla

At the same time as Lucy was achieving her ATCH, her littermate, OTCHX Piroska Sunni Summer CGN "Sunni" was notified that she was the top Obedience Vizsla for Canada in 2010. Shown here with owner/trainer/handler Jackie Boyd of Courtenay.

ADC for Mara!

Congratulations to Sue and Mara on achieving the Agility Dog of Canada title. You really develop a bond in Agility. They also took a 15,000 K trip around Canada to match the one a couple of years ago around the US.
Lilly at 16

Here's a good picture of Lilly, now 16 1/2, our oldest living pup. She was born Nov 20, '94 - Piroska Roused 'n Roving by Int Ch Samsson's Boaz (owned by Ben & Joanne Weldon, Oregon) out of our Bonanza - Ch Piroska Bonanza CD .
We reluctantly sold this pup to Tom Ford, who lived in a 9th floor condo in downtown Portland. His family had never had a dog so everything but Tom was negative but he was persistent so we gave in. He's a contractor who built in Oregon and California and Lilly went with him. He later married Donna and together they have obviously done a great job of giving Lilly a long and happy life. Congratulations to all 3!

Winter Fun

Pictured are Kristy Emery of Vancouver running her 2 Vs near Whistler as they skied cross-country for 2 hours. The Vs run 3-5 times as far as the owner in hunting mode so they enjoyed their beds the next day! Pipacs is 11 and kept up with Petal, over 9 years her junior. Pipacs is sired by Winsong's Janos Voros Vadasz in California out of our Fila. Petal is by Scanner out of Pistil.
Vs love the snow as long as they can keep warm exercising. This also makes the point that there isn't much a well-trained, well-bred V can't enjoy with you, giving them pleasure and multiplying yours. Kayaking, sailing, fishing, touring cross-country and of course, hunting are examples of this.
Congratulations to Seven!

Emma Hedman of North Van reports that Seven has done it again! He qualified in 5 out of 7 runs in his 2nd Agility trial. He is a Pistil/Scanner pup who will be 2 in a month. He earned his Starters Jumpers title and has 2 of the 3 legs needed for his AADC - Advanced Agility Dog of Canada. His registered name is Piroska Brace For Impact and he is certainly living up to it. Emma calls him Seven as he was the 7th pup of 7 and the only male.
Update Seven was in his first Flyball test April 9 and qualified for his first Flyball Title!! FD for Flyball Dog. His best time was 4.04 seconds - which for a beginner is awesome!

Congratulations to Sunni!

Sunni (a Fire/Fling pup 5 years ago) just got her 2nd Obedience CH and her CGN. Proud owner/trainer/ handler is Jackie Boyd of Courtenay here on VI.

Are Vizslas affectionate?

Do they get along with other animals?

Here's Tango kissing Scout. Tango is a Toldi/Fila pup in May '02. They are owned by Irene Kutos who will be moving this spring from up-Island to Princeton. She has formed an Equine Accessories business - the link is: http://www.i-candycreations.ca Happy Trails to all 3!

"Seven" goes ADC and SGDC!

Amazing news from Emma in Vancouver, handler/owner of "Seven" Piroska Brace For Impact. Seven is 20 months old out of Pistil by Scanner. Dogs are not allowed to run in agility trials until they are at least 18 months old, due to possible damage to muscles and bones before they are mature. A fast dog puts a lot of strain on his body during a run as they have about 40 seconds to complete about 20 obstacles. Emma has been working with Seven from the time he arrived at 8 weeks to prepare him mentally and physically for Agility. You need 3 legs for each title. Under the Agility Association of Canada rules you must have no faults during the whole run in order to get 1 leg toward a title. The CKC and AKC allow 15 faults which makes it much easier. Faults are given for going too close to the wrong article out of sequence, missing one, missing the colored contact zone on the ramps, knocking a bar off on a jump etc. Perfect or "clean" runs are very difficult to achieve. The handler has to be thinking a couple of obstacles ahead to determine the fastest track and direct the dog over his current obstacle. Seven achieved 7 out of 8 clear runs in his first trial. Lots of teams trial for a year before their first leg. Here is Emma's report: Enclosed is a video of his first run.

Hi guys!

Some exciting news, 7 achieved his ADC and Starters Gamblers titles this weekend. He also would have got his Starters Jumpers title but both Q's were under the same judge, so the 2nd doesn't count toward the title. In total, he Q'd in 7 out of 8 runs! Not bad for a 20-month old "baby dog's" first trial! :-)
We would have had a perfect weekend, except unfortunatley in the snooker run I had to run right after 7's BEST dog friend. He's a super loud, barky border collie and 7 had trouble concentrating on his run after getting worked up right before. I am SO proud of my little man and feel very lucky to have him in my life...Thank you! :-)
Attached are some photos of 7 with Judge Julia getting his ADC and at home with all his Q ribbons and ADC ribbon.

~Emma

Ribbons for Petal!

Here's Petal (Piroska Petal To The Metal CGN) after her first 2 Companion Dog trials in Obedience on Nov 13 with her 2 ribbons for qualifying. One to go! Congratulations Kristy and Petal!

Field Trial Training

Kristy Emery of Vancouver at a Field Trial training session on Oct 23. Here she is introducing the dog, Petal, (Petal To The Metal out of Pistil/Scanner) to a chukar to build its birdiness so that it will seek them out and point them in the field. Following are snaps in the field. They took part in a practice obedience trial on the next day. That's good versatility!

When run with another dog (as they do in Trials - it's called a brace) she honored automatically. That is she locked up in a point to acknowledge the other dog's find. This usually takes considerable training as the more birdy a dog is the more he wants to steal the point. You don't want either dog to move until the bird is flushed by the handler and shot. Then one will be sent to retrieve. This prevents 1 or both rushing out on the flush and possibly getting shot.

Congratulations again to Connie & Vida!

Vida received her CKC Novice Rally Obedience title in Calgary and her 2nd leg in Novice Obedience. In September she finished her CARO Novice Rally obedience with a High In Class.
Special greetings to Daughter, Grace Elizabeth, born April 16.
CGN Title for Petal

Congratulations to Kristy and Petal on obtaining her CGN - Canine Good Neighbor title in obedience. They are also working now in field work, which Petal loves, of course.

Congratulations to Sunni and Jackie!

Sunni achieved her OTCHX September 11th at the Courtenay CKC Obedience trials. To qualify for OTCHX the dog must qualify in both the Open and Utility Class in the same trial on 5 different occasions.

Sunni has enough points accumulated for her MOTCH which is earned by acquiring 40 points (15 points in each Open & Utility, the remaining points can be obtained from either class) The minimum score is 190 in Open or 185 in utility. A High in Class is also required. The HIC is what we are now trying to achieve.

Jackie Boyd
Congratulations to Charlie!

Congratulations to MBISS Am CH Dunantul's Czardas of Tierah "Charlie" won another BOB at the Trail's End Vizsla Club of Oregon Specialty show on Sept. 3rd over 34 Vizslas (including several prominent ones up from California). He was handled by Bob Perry.

Charlie was sired by our Am/Can Ch Piroska Toldin's Turn 'n Burn FDJ CGC "Falco" who won an Award of Merit at both the Canadian National and Ontario Specialty in '04 over 67 Vizslas. Frank Lacko finished his AM CH with 4 straight 5 point wins! Charlie's dam was Am/Int CH Dunantul Ruby Rozsa of Tierah JH.

Charlie is standing at stud to approved bitches with his owners Ben and Joanne Weldon near Portland, Oregon. Their email address is weldon@bctonline.com

Congratulations, Rea!

Congratulations to Lisa & Rea! They attained their Agility Dog of Canada title and are 1 leg away from their Starters Games title. Under the AAC, each leg must be fault-free to qualify - 100 points out of 100. ( Under CKC and AKC Agility rules you are allowed up to 15 fault points on each run.) They also scored 106 points in their Advanced Gamblers run. This is a run at the 2nd level where you must work away from the dog so he must almost read your mind. It's a treat to watch. It shows the amazing bond between the handler and the dog. Vizslas love Agility as it challenges both their mind and body. (It's the same for the handler too!)
Teaka, age 14 2/3

This is Teaka, owned by Carol Best outside Victoria. She was born Jan 16, 1996 out of our Am/Can Ch Bonanza by Am/Can Ch Pacer so she is 14 2/3 years old. She is taking time to smell the roses in the one picture and still able to make her ears fly in the 2nd. Congratulations to Carol for her wonderful care - this is a rare age for a Vizsla.

Update: After a long and happy life Teaka left us in the last week of September doing her favorite thing - running through the woods and fields.

Pheasant Hunting

Lance & Lori had Teaser (their female) and Keeper (her brother) from Toldi/Pele litter in '06, pheasant hunting in Alberta for a couple of days this October. Here's 3 shots. In the one of them tied out in camp they are watching a flock of Snow Geese go over.

"Double Trouble"

"Pili" (Pistil/Scanner) is enjoying living with Echo (Fila/Cayenne) and Jo-Anne and David in Victoria. One reason we won't sell 2 pups together is that it disrupts the learning process. If there is an older, well trained dog the pup will pick up a lot of good habits by osmosis. Pili is leading her obedience class at 5 months and has convinced the trainer that she should have a Vizsla! Experienced owners makes a big difference too!

Congratulations!

Keeper wins an Award of Merit with handler Lance Sundquist who also ran his littermate, Teaser, owned by Lance & Laurie. It was in the Amateur Shooting Dog event on Sept 19. Judges were Phil Stanton & Susan Russel Matsumoto at the BC All Breed Pointing Club Fall Walking Field Trial at Merritt, BC.

Vida - Piroska Living La Vida Loca - (Pistil/Scanner , May, 08) took High In Trial in her first Obedience Trial with her owner Connie Moody with 192 points in Prince George on Sept 27. Many thanks, Connie for doing so well at challenging this youngster.

Razzy Boy
Shiraz - Piroska's Olympic Flame
January 16, 1998 - July 16, 2009

The Maddocks in Calgary sent the following eloquent letter on the passing of their first Vizsla, Shiraz. It answers the question we get asked quite often by inquirers when they hear our price. They ask "Since we don't intend on showing, doing field work, obedience or agility trials can't we get a lower priced dog?" We reply that every pup we breed comes from multiple generations of Champions, all with working titles and thus imbued with the best qualifications, temperament and health. They should have the right conformation and the brains, biddability and birdiness to be capable of doing well whatever you ask of them - especially as "just a pet".

"They say the dog is man's best friend. That he is loyal, faithful, protective and never judges. He is the friend who is there for you when no one else is. He brings joy, laughter, and let's be honest, the odd moments of anger too. But above all of that, he brings many great memories to your life. Sometimes a dog will even bring you to tears...

Today the tears are tears of sorrow of a life past. The tears are for a friend who brought so much to our lives, yet never spoke a word. He didn't have to speak for you to get to know the kind of gentle soul he was. You just had to witness the way he pranced around with a prized stick in his mouth, or how he would get oh so close to a new born baby without touching it, to realize how gentle he was. Always the gentleman, he would wait for you to walk down the stairs or out a door before he would follow. He was also the house exterminator - without hesitation, he would gulp up that scary looking spider or that pesky moth that had entered the house.

One of our fondest memories goes back to when he was a couple of years old. Stacey was walking Shiraz and the newly born Bronwyn at the dog park. A group of hornets surrounded the baby buggy and it looked certain that our precious baby would be stung. But the gentleman stepped in and wedged himself between the baby buggy and the hornets. He was stung three times. Bronwyn and Stacey were unharmed.

Today after a brief struggle with cancer Shiraz bid us farewell. No words can really express what he meant to our family. He was the dog you always dreamed of owning. He was gentle, kind and loved being around people.

When we picked his name over 11 and half years ago we could not have imagined that it would have suited him so perfectly:

In the words of Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate describing a Shiraz: full-bodied power, great definition and lovely elegance.

Please take a moment to view this incredible video that was made over 10 years ago by a very special friend.

Lexi

Congratulations to Ken & Joan Hunter of Denver, Colorado on obtaining Lexi's Senior Hunter title (the 2nd level of Hunt Tests, similar to our Field Dog title in Canada but more difficult as they run with a bracemate which can mess you up).

Following is a letter from the Hunters in Colorado describing her field work and their love for her. All too often owners don't keep in touch with the breeder. Some only extoll their dog's virtue after 14 years of ownership. Thank you Hunters.

CH Piroska Toldin's Shooting Star SH

Dear Hilarie, Barrie, Frank and Martha,

I am pleased to be able to report that Lexi completed her requirements this Saturday for her Senior Hunter title. This has been a very strange season for hunt tests this spring. All of the tests scheduled for March and April were snowed out. It seemed every Friday we would get a vicious snow storm with heavy snow. The tests were either canceled or rescheduled for later into the spring. So we ended up running in mid May and early June.

Lexi is living up to her potential. She has a lot of natural ability in the field. She received mostly nines and a few tens on each of her four legs. At one of her tests she found five birds in the bird field. She easily exceeded the requirements for passing. In four of the six areas they score, Lexi is performing at the Master level. We need to keep working on her retrieve so that it is absolutely to hand. They are very particular about that out here and will not pass any dog at the Master level that is not bringing the bird back to hand and holding it until commanded to release. I have even seen judges fail dogs if they drop the bird and pick it back up and continue to bring it in. But there is no doubt that Lexi has the ability to earn her Master title. That is the goal and we will continue to work on it. Everyone out here is now out of birds so it will be a month or so before we can continue her training to get her ready for the fall hunt tests.

The last leg on Saturday was run in particularly difficult conditions. The wind was blowing very hard and the cover was waist high in some areas. They were planting Quail which were nestled down deep and therefore hard to scent. Many dogs went birdless. Only 3 out of 8 Seniors passed. On of those three was our Lexi to finish her fourth leg.

I have attached a few pictures of Lexi in the field. I have many more pictures and in a day or so will have some that were actually taken of her in her final hunt test leg. I think if you saw her you would be proud of her. I know we sure are. She is a beautiful girl with the sweetest temperament. She is just a pleasure to live with and to have in our home. At the end of the day, all the titles are nice but what is really important is that she has a kind and loving nature with a heart as big as Montana. There is not a single day that goes by that we do not say how very lucky we are to have our Lexi.

The first picture (upper left) is Lexi pointing. The picture on the upper right is of her "honoring" her bracemate's point. It is also called backing. Upon seeing the other dog on point a trained dog is expected to lock up as well, as opposed to rushing in and stealing the point or, God forbid, flush the bird. This prevents a dog being shot - they must hold their point until sent to retrieve.

The last picture on the lower left is of Lexi retrieving the bird to hand. Some hunting dogs just point, some just retrieve. The beauty of a versatile dog like the Vizsla is that one dog does both and also, as the standard says (unique to the breed) is "demonstratively affectionate". Her American Championship is testimony to her excellent conformation as well. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly dog!

Mid-May at Mill Bay (how's that for "poetry"?)

2 of our pups shared the Best of Breed over the 4 days for 2 points each. They were Piroska Golden Gunner "Gunner" owned by Alan & Rita Campbell of Vancouver and Piroska's Scentsational "Rea" owned by Lisa Duffy of Comox. No one took pictures ;-(.

12 month old communes with DOG (GOD spelled backwards)

Krysty's nephew Brayden, turning 1 this week, shares a bond with Pipacs, 9. When she sees him coming she lies down and he kneels beside her and she guides him onto her flank with her foreleg. He then lies there for up to 15 minutes soaking up the good vibrations.
Warning: Never leave a child unattended with a dog until you are sure the child knows not to abuse the dog. Toddlers have a fetish about poking at eyes (in dolls or dogs) and some think the dog is a mattress or trampoline. If two or more kids are there they may get into a screaming contest to see which can hit, poke, or pinch the dog the most times. If the dog in frustration snaps, the child runs and reports the "attack" and the dog may be put down or dumped for a situation not his fault in any way.
